Setting up an Android phone for a child.

Uses Google Family Link to supervise your child's account. Works on Android 11 and later. Takes about 30 minutes the first time.

Heads up: On Android, some manufacturers (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus) add their own "Kids Mode" on top. We recommend using Family Link instead — it's consistent across devices and keeps controls tied to the account, not the handset.
  1. Install Family Link on your phone

Grab it from the App Store or Play Store. Sign in as the parent.

  2. Create your child's Google account

In Family Link: + → Add Child → Create Account. Enter their birthdate accurately. If they're under 13, you'll need to confirm parental consent.

  3. Sign in to the child's phone with the new account

Factory-reset the phone if it's a hand-me-down. During setup, sign in with the supervised account you just made.

⚠︎ If you sign in with your own account first, you'll have to reset again. Do this step fresh.
  4. Open Family Link and link the device

On the child's phone, Family Link will prompt you to connect. Approve the link from your own phone when it notifies you.

  5. Set app approval to "Parent approval required"

Family Link → child → Controls → Content restrictions → Google Play → Apps & games → Allow all content → Parent approval.

  6. Set Play Store age ratings

Under the same menu, set Apps & games to the age rating you want. Also set Movies, TV, and Books. Default is usually set too high.

  7. Turn on SafeSearch & Chrome filters

Controls → Filters on Google Search → Strict. Controls → Filters on Chrome → Try to block explicit sites.

  8. Set daily screen time

Controls → Screen time. Pick daily caps by day of week, and a bedtime. Caps are total across the device, not per app.

  9. Add per-app time limits

Under Screen time → App limits, add caps for the handful of apps that need them — usually TikTok, YouTube, and whatever game is the current obsession.

  10. Turn on Location

Controls → Location. Useful for peace of mind; your child is notified that their location is shared with you.

  11. Review installed apps together

Open each one with your child. What is it? Who do they talk to on it? If an app feels sketchy to you, trust that instinct — uninstall it and talk about why.

✓ Revisit every 2–3 months. Kids install new apps constantly.
