Amazon Prime Video: the parent’s setup guide
Kids profile + PIN + Freevee ad caveats, all in one place.
Kids profile + Viewing Restrictions
Amazon Prime Video now supports Kids profiles with age-based filters — but the settings live in two places: Prime Video & the Amazon account itself.
Setup
- Sign in at primevideo.com.
- Manage Profiles › Add Profile › choose Kids, set age.
- Account & Settings › Parental Controls › Viewing Restrictions — set maturity rating per device.
- Set a Prime Video PIN (separate from your Amazon password).
- Require PIN for Prime Video purchases and rentals.
X-Ray and Alexa integration
X-Ray can surface cast info, trivia, and (occasionally) content warnings that mention mature themes. Harmless, but worth knowing.
If Alexa is enabled on Fire TV, voice searches can surface content outside kid profile. Restrict Alexa on the kid’s account (see our Alexa guide).
Freevee / ads
Amazon’s ad-supported streams (Freevee, some Prime Video titles) show ads that may not match the content’s rating. Ad content is less filtered than show content — keep younger kids on ad-free services where possible.
Amazon Kids+ integration
If you have Amazon Kids+ (for Fire tablets), some Prime Video kids content is included. See our Amazon Fire guide.
Common questions
Where are Prime Video’s parental controls?
In two places, which is what makes them easy to half-configure. Create a Kids profile with an age under Manage Profiles at primevideo.com, then set Viewing Restrictions per device under Account & Settings › Parental Controls, and set a Prime Video PIN separate from your Amazon password.
Why do ads show content above my child’s rating?
Because ad content is less filtered than show content. On Amazon’s ad-supported streams — Freevee and some Prime Video titles — the advertising may not match the rating of what your child is watching. Keeping younger children on ad-free services avoids this entirely.
Should I require a PIN for purchases?
Yes. Set the Prime Video PIN to be required for purchases and rentals, which is separate from your Amazon account password and is the control that actually prevents accidental rentals.
What is X-Ray and does it matter?
It surfaces cast information, trivia and occasionally content warnings mentioning mature themes while a title plays. It is harmless, but worth knowing it exists if your child asks about something that appeared on screen.
