Xbox: the parent’s guide
Family Group, the Xbox Family Settings app, and the communication controls that actually matter.
Xbox parental controls live in your Microsoft family group rather than on the console itself, so you add your child as a family member at account.microsoft.com/family and the Xbox inherits those settings. The Xbox Family Settings phone app is the tool worth installing: it manages screen time in real time, sends purchase-approval requests to you, and shows what your child has been playing.

Sign in with your Microsoft account, then add your kid as a family member at account.microsoft.com/family. Xbox inherits those settings.
Setup on the console
- Profile & system › Settings › Account › Family settings › Manage family members.
- Confirm your kid’s age category (child / teen / adult).
- Under Privacy & online safety, use the default child/teen preset, then customize.
- Screen time: set via the Xbox Family Settings app on your phone.
- Purchases: require parent approval for every purchase. Xbox calls this “Ask a Parent” — “Ask to Buy” is Apple’s term for the equivalent, so do not go looking for it here.
- Content filters: age rating, web browsing, communication defaults.
Communication controls
- Multiplayer and voice chat — restrict to friends, or off entirely for under-12s.
- Cross-network play — decide whether to allow PlayStation/PC players in voice chat.
- Message requests from strangers — off.
- Looking-For-Group invites — friends only.
- Clubs — worth setting, and still live. Microsoft lists it among the things you can allow or block: your child’s ability to “join multiplayer online games, create and join clubs, broadcast their gameplay, add friends and chat”. A club is a persistent group with its own chat, so it is a standing room your child can be in rather than a one-off lobby.

Discord on Xbox
