Xbox: the parent’s guide
Family Group, the Xbox Family Settings app, and the communication controls that actually matter.
Xbox Family Group
Sign in with your Microsoft account, then add your kid as a family member at account.microsoft.com/family. Xbox inherits those settings.
Setup on the console
- System › Settings › Account › Family settings › Manage family members.
- Confirm your kid’s age category (child / teen / adult).
- Under Privacy & online safety, use the default child/teen preset, then customize.
- Screen time: set via the Xbox Family Settings app on your phone.
- Purchases: require parent approval for every purchase (“Ask to Buy”).
- Content filters: age rating, web browsing, communication defaults.
Communication controls
- Multiplayer and voice chat — restrict to friends, or off entirely for under-12s.
- Cross-network play — decide whether to allow PlayStation/PC players in voice chat.
- Message requests from strangers — off.
- Club/Looking-For-Group invites — friends only.
Xbox Family Settings app
The best parent tool on Xbox is the phone app — real-time screen-time management, approve-purchase notifications, and activity visibility. Install it.
Discord on Xbox
Xbox can connect to Discord for voice. This creates a bridge to Discord’s separate risk surface. Review our Discord guide and consider turning off the integration for younger players.
Common questions
What is the best parent tool for Xbox?
The Xbox Family Settings phone app. It gives real-time screen-time management, approve-purchase notifications and activity visibility, and is considerably more usable than managing everything from the console itself.
How do I stop strangers talking to my child on Xbox?
Under Privacy & online safety: restrict multiplayer and voice chat to friends, or off entirely for under-12s; turn off message requests from strangers; limit club and Looking-For-Group invites to friends; and decide deliberately whether cross-network play should bring PlayStation and PC players into voice chat.
Does Xbox connect to Discord?
Yes, for voice chat — and that bridges your child to Discord’s separate risk surface, which the Xbox controls do not reach. For younger players, consider turning the integration off; our Discord guide covers the settings that matter.
How do I stop surprise Xbox purchases?
Set purchases to require parent approval every time under Family settings. Paired with the phone app’s approval notifications, you see each request as it is made rather than on the statement.
