The problem every service here shares

Maturity ratings are set on a profile, and a profile is one tap away from every other profile on the device. Unless the adult profile has a PIN on it, the ratings you carefully set on the kid profile decide nothing at all.

Set up the box first, then each service inside it, because they do not inherit from each other. A PIN on the Apple TV or the Roku does not carry into Netflix, and a rating set in Netflix does not carry into Disney+. That is why this section has guides for both.

Advertising sits outside all of it. A maturity rating is applied to the programme, not to the advertising sold against it, so an ad-supported tier can put a trailer in front of a child that the same service would not have let them choose. Where a household is paying for a service anyway, the ad-free tier is worth more on a child's profile than on an adult's.

Search and voice are the other way round the controls. A remote with a microphone reaches the whole catalogue, not the filtered view a kid profile presents, which is why several of these guides end up talking about the assistant rather than the app.

When parental controls change

Streaming profile and PIN controls move between app versions. Roughly monthly we send new guides, changes to controls like these, and scams worth knowing about.
