VR headsets: the parent’s guide
VRChat, Rec Room, immersion time, and the Parent Dashboard most Quest-using parents don’t know exists.
Meta Quest
Meta Quest (2, 3, Pro) is the dominant consumer VR platform. Age 10 is Meta’s stated minimum (with supervision), 13+ for a personal account.
Setup
- Parent creates a Meta account and sets up Family Sharing.
- Kid uses a Quest preteen account (10-12) or standard teen account (13+).
- Enable Parent Dashboard at familycenter.meta.com.
- Review app approvals, screen time, and friend requests.
What to watch
- VRChat and Rec Room — social VR with voice chat. Adult content in user-made worlds is a real concern.
- Immersion — 30 minutes in a headset affects kids differently than 30 minutes on a screen. Short sessions, breaks.
- Eye strain and motion sickness — more pronounced for younger users.
PlayStation VR2
Same console-family controls apply. Sony’s recommended minimum is 12. See PlayStation guide.
Apple Vision Pro
Minimum age 13 per Apple. Use a child Apple ID and Screen Time. For now, limited kid-specific content.
The bigger question
VR is a fast-moving surface. Ask what your kid does in VR — not just what platform they use. “What game / world did you visit today?” is the right question.
