The chat settings worth knowing cold

In Roblox, text chat is everywhere — including in 4+ rated games. Your first move: Account Restrictions, which hard-locks chat off and limits games. For older kids who want public games, set chat to friends-only. See our Roblox guide.

In Fortnite, voice chat is the #1 risk — squad modes pair kids with strangers who can talk freely. Turn voice to friends-only or off. See our Fortnite/Minecraft guide.

Money loss, in both games

Robux and V-Bucks are the two most-scammed kid currencies. The pattern — “free Robux/V-Bucks” links — is covered in our scam-link article. The kill switch: 2-step verification on the kid’s account, purchase PIN, no saved payment method.

Stranger-contact pattern

Grooming through games follows a repeatable pattern:

  1. Friendly contact in a game lobby.
  2. Friend request, then move conversation to Discord or Snap.
  3. Increasingly personal conversation.
  4. Request for photos or an in-person meet.

Teach your kid: any move from “game chat” to “Discord” or “Snap” with a stranger is the red line. Tell you first, always.

The in-game purchase review

Do this monthly: open the kid’s account, review purchase history. Explain unknown charges. This is how you catch a scam early.
