Roblox and Fortnite safety for parents

Roblox and Fortnite carry different primary risks, so they need different settings. In Roblox the controls that matter sit in Parental Controls on a linked parent account: content restrictions decide which games your child can open, and communication settings decide whether they can chat at all. In Fortnite the exposure is voice chat, where children are matched with strangers who can talk freely, so set Epic Voice Chat Permission to Friends Only or Nobody.
The chat settings worth knowing cold
In Roblox, chat is no longer simply on: Roblox now says every user must pass an age check before they can use communication features at all, that users aged 5 to 9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat, and that users under 16 need it for Direct chat. Your first move is to link a parent account and open Parental Controls — Communication decides whether and with whom your child can chat, and Content restrictions sets a content-maturity level and lets you allow or block specific games outright. In Fortnite, voice chat is the #1 risk — squad modes pair kids with strangers who can talk freely. In Epic’s parental controls, set Epic Voice Chat Permission to Friends Only or Nobody; Epic caps it at Friends Only for under-10s and at friends, team members and connections for under-13s in any case. Money loss, in both games

Both platforms also give you a spending brake — Roblox has a monthly spending limit in Parental Controls, and Epic can require your Parental Controls PIN for every real-money payment.
Stranger-contact pattern
Grooming through games follows a repeatable pattern:
- Friendly contact in a game lobby.
- Friend request, then move conversation to Discord or Snap.
- Increasingly personal conversation.
- Request for photos or an in-person meet.
Teach your kid: any move from “game chat” to “Discord” or “Snap” with a stranger is the red line. Tell you first, always.
The in-game purchase review
Do this monthly: open the kid’s account, review purchase history. Explain unknown charges. This is how you catch a scam early.
