Open guide →Monitoring tools are not variations on one product
Monitoring tools split by what they actually do. Bark watches what a child writes and alerts you. Qustodio, Norton, Kaspersky and Mobicip filter what a device can reach. Canopy works on the device itself, on images, as they load. Google Family Link is free and native, but only covers Android and Chromebook. Aura bundles the filtering with identity protection for the whole household.
One limit applies to all of them: none can see inside end-to-end encrypted messaging. If your teen is on Signal or WhatsApp, no tool on this page reads those conversations, and a product that implies otherwise is describing something else. That is a reason to keep talking to them, not a reason to buy a bigger tool.

When parental controls change
Monitoring tools change what they can see, and sometimes stop being available. Roughly monthly we send new guides, changes to controls like these, and scams worth knowing about.
