Google Assistant & Nest: the parent’s setup guide
Voice Match for kids, Family Link hooks, and the YouTube-on-Nest setting that matters.
Family voice on Google Assistant
Google Assistant supports per-person voice recognition. Train the kid’s voice and Assistant adjusts responses, filters content, and routes purchases to the parent.
Setup
- Google Home app › Household › add your kid as a family member (supervised).
- On your kid’s phone or Nest speaker: Assistant settings › Voice Match — train their voice.
- Family Link controls apply to their voice use — YouTube filtering, purchase approvals, content restrictions.
- Disable voice purchasing: Home app › Settings › Payments — off for kid voice.
- Enable “Filter explicit music” under the kid’s profile.
Nest Hub / Nest Mini in kid rooms
- Nest devices broadcast and intercom by default. Disable “Live Audio” or restrict to Home members.
- Ambient screen on Nest Hubs shows photos, news, and recently-viewed content — check what it cycles through in a kid’s room.
- YouTube on Nest Hub can play full YouTube or YouTube Kids. Set YouTube Kids as default.
Do Not Disturb + Downtime
Family Link’s Downtime covers the kid’s phone but not always the Nest speaker. Set Nest’s own Do Not Disturb schedule for kid rooms.
Privacy
Voice recordings are opt-in on the kid’s account. Home app › Google Account › Data & privacy › Web & App Activity › off for “Include voice and audio recordings” on the kid’s profile.

Can Google Assistant tell my child apart from me?
Yes — Voice Match provides per-person voice recognition. Train your child’s voice and Assistant adjusts its responses, filters content and routes purchases to you rather than completing them for them.
Do Family Link rules apply to a Nest speaker?
Partly. Family Link controls apply to their voice use, covering YouTube filtering, purchase approvals and content restrictions — but Downtime covers the phone and not always the Nest speaker. Set Nest’s own Do Not Disturb schedule for bedrooms separately.
What should I change on a Nest Hub in a child’s room?
Disable Live Audio or restrict it to Home members so the device cannot be used as an intercom; check what the ambient screen cycles through, since it shows photos, news and recently-viewed content; and set YouTube Kids as the default rather than full YouTube.
How do I stop voice purchases?
Home app › Settings › Payments, off for your child’s voice. While you are there, enable “Filter explicit music” under their profile.
Are my child’s voice recordings stored?
