Google Assistant & Nest: the parent’s setup guide
Voice Match for kids, Family Link hooks, and the YouTube-on-Nest setting that matters.
Google Assistant and Nest speakers support per-person voice recognition, so training your child's voice lets the Assistant filter content, adjust its responses and route any purchase request to you instead. The gap most parents miss is scheduling: Family Link's Downtime governs your child's phone but does not always reach the Nest speaker, so a speaker in a child's room needs its own Do Not Disturb schedule set separately.
Family voice on Google Assistant
Google Assistant supports per-person voice recognition. Train the kid’s voice and Assistant adjusts responses, filters content, and routes purchases to the parent.
Setup
- Google Home app › Household › add your kid as a family member (supervised).
- On your kid’s phone or Nest speaker: Assistant settings › Voice Match — train their voice.
- Family Link controls apply to their voice use — YouTube filtering, purchase approvals, content restrictions.
- Disable voice purchasing: Home app › Settings › Payments — off for kid voice.
- Enable “Filter explicit music” under the kid’s profile.
Nest Hub / Nest Mini in kid rooms
- Anyone in your Google Home household can send a Broadcast message that plays aloud on a Nest speaker, including one in a bedroom. The control that matters is membership rather than a toggle we can point you at: review who is invited to the home in the Google Home app and remove anyone who should not be able to speak into that room. Google’s Nest help pages do not render for automated readers, so if there is a per-device switch we have not been able to confirm it — check the device settings on your own screen.
- Ambient screen on Nest Hubs shows photos, news, and recently-viewed content — check what it cycles through in a kid’s room.
- YouTube on Nest Hub can play full YouTube or YouTube Kids. Set YouTube Kids as default.
Do Not Disturb + Downtime
Family Link’s Downtime covers the kid’s phone but not always the Nest speaker. Set Nest’s own Do Not Disturb schedule for kid rooms.
Privacy
Voice recordings are opt-in on the kid’s account. Home app › Google Account › Data & privacy › Web & App Activity › off for “Include voice and audio recordings” on the kid’s profile.

How do I stop voice purchases?
