Twenty questions grouped by age, written to open a conversation rather than start an interrogation. Each is phrased so there is no correct answer to guess, which is what stops a child managing you instead of talking to you. Use one at a time, in the car or over a meal, and treat a short answer as a normal first response.

Ages 5-7

1. What was the funniest thing you saw online this week?
2. If something popped up that scared you, what would you do?
3. Why do we watch YouTube together and not alone?
4. What’s the difference between a game you play alone and one with other people?
5. Can you show me your favorite thing to do on the iPad?

Ages 8-12

1. Who do you talk to most online? Do I know them?
2. Has anyone ever asked you for a photo or your real name?
3. What’s the weirdest thing a stranger ever said to you?
4. If someone offered you free Robux / V-Bucks, what would you do?
5. Why do you think someone would want a kid’s account?
6. Has anyone been mean to you in a group chat?
7. Walk me through your day on the phone — what’s the first app you open?

Ages 13-17

1. What would you do if a friend sent you something you shouldn’t have seen?
2. Do you know anyone who’s been sextorted? (no names)
3. What’s on TikTok right now that makes you feel worse when you watch it?
4. If you had to give up one app forever, which would it be?
5. Do you ever talk to AI chatbots? What do you like about them?
6. Is there a DM you wish you hadn’t sent? (You’re not in trouble for answering.)
7. How do you handle someone who won’t stop messaging you?
8. Do you know what you’d do if a nude of you got out?
