Google TV & Chromecast: the parent’s setup guide
Kids profile, content restrictions, bedtime schedule — and why casting is a Wi-Fi question, not a Google TV setting.
Kids profile on Google TV
Google TV supports per-user kids profiles with app approvals, content restrictions and screen-time limits — though Google warns that “kids profiles may not be available in some regions or on some devices”, so check yours before you plan around them. The controls govern Google’s own recommendations and the apps you allow. They do not filter inside Netflix or Disney+, and there is no setting that limits who can cast to the TV.
- From the Google TV home screen, go to your profile picture or initial. Under “Choose an account”, select Add account › Add a kid, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Choose the apps you want on the kid’s home screen during setup. You can change this later at All settings › Accounts & Profiles › your kid’s profile › Manage apps.
- In the same profile, open Content restrictions and set the ratings limits for Movies and TV.
- Under Screen time, set a Daily limit and a Bedtime. Limits come in 15-minute steps up to 8 hours; bedtimes in 30-minute steps.
- There is no setting that limits casting to known devices. Anyone on your Wi-Fi can cast to the device, so casting is controlled by who is on the network — a guest Wi-Fi network is the actual lever here, not a Google TV setting.
You will need your Google Account PIN or password to open any of those profile settings. Turning on Kids lock for the profile means that same PIN is needed to leave the kid’s profile.
YouTube on the TV
YouTube is not restricted from the kid’s profile on the TV. Google’s route is a supervised YouTube account, set up from a phone or computer: go to g.co/YourFamily, sign in with the account you use to manage your child, select the child, then Go to Family Link › Content restrictions › YouTube, and choose “YouTube and YouTube Music (parent supervised)”. Legacy Chromecast (no remote)
Google’s parental controls are a Google TV feature: kids profiles, content restrictions and screen time all live in the Google TV interface. A plain Chromecast dongle has none of that — it plays what is cast to it. Parental control happens on the phone or laptop doing the cast, not on the Chromecast itself.
What Google TV doesn’t do
- Doesn’t filter content inside third-party apps (Netflix, Disney+) — those have their own profiles. Google states plainly that content restrictions do not apply to “content recommendations directly provided by apps” or “search results from apps”.
- Guest Mode no longer exists. Google says “guest mode is no longer supported” and that “guests can cast content from their Android or iOS devices by connecting to the host’s Wi-Fi network”. There is nothing to disable — a secure Wi-Fi network is the control, and Google recommends one for exactly this reason: it “helps prevent others from joining your Wi-Fi network without your knowledge and casting content to your TV”.

How do I set up a kids profile on Google TV?

We have an older Chromecast with no remote. How do I control it?
You cannot control it on the device. Google’s parental controls — kids profiles, content restrictions, screen time — are Google TV features. A plain Chromecast dongle has none of them and plays what is cast to it, so parental control has to happen on the phone or laptop doing the casting.
