Galaxy Tab Kids

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab line includes kid-oriented models (Tab A Kids Edition) and regular Tabs that you can put in Samsung Kids mode. See also our Samsung Kids guide.

Setup for Kids Edition models

  1. Out of the box: Samsung Kids mode is pre-activated.
  2. Create your parent PIN.
  3. Confirm the kid profile (age, photo).
  4. Set time limits and bedtime.
  5. Add apps one-by-one; everything else is hidden.
  6. Subscribe to Samsung Kids+ (optional but expands the content library).

Setup for regular Tab (no Kids Edition)

  1. Create a supervised Google child account via Family Link (use as primary).
  2. In Samsung Kids, pair the child account or set up a local kid profile.
  3. Enable Secure Folder on the parent profile so the kid can’t snoop your apps.

Secure Folder — the hidden gotcha

Samsung Secure Folder hides apps and files behind a PIN / biometric. Kids sometimes use it to hide apps from Family Link. Spot check: Settings › Biometrics and security › Secure Folder.

Samsung DeX and keyboard accessories

Galaxy Tabs support DeX (desktop-like mode) and external keyboards. Once a kid is 10+ and using the tab for schoolwork, consider this setup for productivity — but remember DeX mode may expose different UI elements than Samsung Kids filters.

Common questions

What is Secure Folder, and why should I know about it?

A Samsung feature that hides apps and files behind a separate PIN or biometric. Children sometimes use it to hide apps from Family Link, which makes it the single most useful thing to spot-check on a Galaxy device: Settings › Biometrics and security › Secure Folder.

Do I need a Kids Edition Galaxy Tab?

Not necessarily. Kids Edition models ship with Samsung Kids pre-activated and a bumper case, but any regular Galaxy Tab can be put into Samsung Kids mode. The hardware difference is smaller than the price difference suggests.

How should I set up a regular Galaxy Tab for a child?

Create a supervised Google child account through Family Link and use it as the primary account, then pair that account with Samsung Kids or set up a local kid profile. Enable Secure Folder on your own profile so your apps are not browsable.

Does Samsung DeX affect parental controls?

It can. DeX gives a desktop-like interface that may expose UI elements Samsung Kids normally filters. It is genuinely useful for schoolwork from about age 10, but treat it as a different environment rather than assuming kid-mode restrictions follow into it.
