Chat settings
Among Us has text chat during voting phases. Free-type chat is where the real risk sits.
- Chat type is chosen per lobby, not in an account setting — the Chat tab when you create a game, or the chat filter when you search for one. A player without a full account or parental permission is locked to Quick Chat Only anyway.
- Innersloth lists a chat-censor toggle among its accessibility options, but does not document where it lives; check the in-game settings rather than trusting a menu path from any guide, including this one.
- Play on private lobbies with friends only.
- Public lobbies: expect some chat inappropriate for under-10s.
Voice chat
Among Us Classic — the game this guide covers — has no built-in voice chat. The separate Among Us 3D and Among Us VR titles do, with AI moderation, so check which one your child actually installed. Kids coordinate voice via Discord (see our Discord guide). This is where the real conversation risks live — the game itself is safe.
Real risks
- Public-lobby text chat can include slurs, inappropriate names, scam links.
- “Meet me on Discord” is a common kid-lobby phrase that leads to external contact.
- Impostor mode involves lying strategically — fine for the game, worth discussing that this is game behavior, not real-life behavior.
Parent recommendation
Among Us is low-risk for ages 8+ if played in private lobbies with known friends. For public lobbies, use Quick Chat only and stay nearby for under-10s. Safe for most ages.

Is Among Us safe for my child?
Largely yes. It is rated E10+ (Everyone 10+) and is low-risk from about age 8 when played in private lobbies with known friends. The game itself is safe; the risk sits entirely in who your child is playing with and how they chat.
What is the one Among Us setting to change?
Quick Chat rather than Free Chat for younger players. Chat type is picked per lobby — the Chat tab when creating a game, the chat filter when finding one — not in an account setting, and a child without a full account or parental permission is limited to Quick Chat regardless. Free-type chat during voting phases is where public-lobby risk lives — slurs, inappropriate names and scam links.
Does Among Us have voice chat?

My child was asked to “meet on Discord” in a lobby. Is that a red flag?
It is common enough among kids to be unremarkable on its own, but it is also the standard route from a moderated game lobby to unmoderated private contact. Treat it as a prompt to check who the person is rather than as an emergency.
Should I worry that the game rewards lying?
Not really — strategic deception is the whole mechanic of social deduction. It is worth naming out loud that this is game behaviour rather than real-life behaviour, which most children grasp immediately.
